Raipur Aug 19, . During the lockdown period, people from rural areas had to face severe economic hardship in all parts of the country. The Gaon Connection, in consultation with Lokniti-Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, conducted a sample survey among rural households located in all zones of India. The researchers wanted to find out how people in the villages had coped during the lockdown. The study revealed that about 70 per cent of the workers in Chhattisgarh were able to obtain some form of work through MGNREGA, during the lockdown period.
The implementation of the lockdown from 25th March 2020, affected people from all backgrounds of society. When the migrant labourers first started going back to the villages from the cities, MGNREGA was one of the many sources of employment for them. But, the state-wise statistic of the survey revealed a different picture. About 59 per cent of those seeking work, got work in Rajasthan, that is, more than half of the people. Similarly, in Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand, 70 and 65 per cent of the villagers could obtain employment under MGNREGA during the lockdown. In Gujarat, this figure was only 2 per cent.
