Permanent homes become a reality for Sapera Basti families after 35 years

Under the Sushasan Tihar, Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai on Thursday visited village Bhikhampura in Barmkela development block of Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district, where he inspected houses being constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Sapera Basti and reviewed the progress of development works.
Chief Minister Shri Sai held a warm interaction with families of the Savara (Sapera) Tribal community, who have been living without basic amenities for years, listened to their concerns, and directed officials to ensure their prompt resolution.
While reviewing the under-construction houses, Chief Minister Shri Sai said that the state government is committed to ensuring that the benefits of development and public welfare reach the last person in society. He stated that providing dignified housing to every eligible family is among the government’s highest priorities.
Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai directed officials to ensure that all sanctioned houses and other construction works are completed within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining quality standards.
Villagers informed the Chief Minister that they had been living in ‘kutcha’ houses for nearly 35 years. Through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, their dream of owning permanent homes is now becoming a reality. Beneficiaries said that for the first time, they have hope of living in a safe and dignified house with their families. Taking their demands seriously, Chief Minister Shri Sai directed officials to ensure the swift resolution of matters including caste certificates and other essential cases.
During the visit, Chief Minister Shri Sai assisted differently-abled beneficiary Ramabai Sidar by providing her with crutches and also distributed chocolates to children while interacting warmly with them. Chief Minister’s simplicity and affectionate approach generated special enthusiasm among the villagers.
It is noteworthy that in the Sapera Basti of Bhikhampura, Pradhan Mantri Awas houses, CC roads, and other basic infrastructure facilities are being developed for 68 families. Beneficiaries here are being provided benefits under various welfare schemes including the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Public Distribution System, Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, and Jal Jeevan Mission. During 2024–25, a total 25 houses were sanctioned; during 2025–26, a total 14 houses were sanctioned and around 14 houses were sanctioned under the Chief Minister Housing Scheme. Additionally, 10 other eligible families have been included in the Awas Plus 2.0 survey.
During the programme, under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai planted a Kadam sapling, while Finance Minister Shri O.P. Choudhary planted a Banyan sapling. A total of five saplings were planted in the premises, conveying the message of environmental conservation and a greener future.
A large number of villagers were present on the occasion.
